Keynote Presentation

NAVIGATING THE WINDS OF TURBULENCE

Noted entrepreneur, pilot and author Howard Putnam will take the stage to give this year’s Keynote Address. Known as the former President and CEO of Southwest Airlines, Putnam is highly regarded in business circles as one of the premier rainmakers of airline industry and the savior of Braniff International. His leadership tactics have been studied at Harvard University and are the foundation for his acclaimed book, ”THE WINDS OF TURBULENCE: A CEO’s Reflection on Surviving and Thriving on the Cutting Edge of Corporate Crisis.” Putnam has also brings his corporate expertise to the small business world, serving as Chairman of a startup investment company and two small manufacturing and distribution companies. A gifted orator, Putnam is a member of the National Speakers Association Hall of Fame.

COACH CARTER: A STORY OF SUCCESS THROUGH CHANGE

Ken Carter understands the commitment that one makes to affect change in an organization. In his messages to civic and business leaders around the world, Carter shares his story and hard-hitting advice about accountability, integrity, teamwork and leadership to succeed both on and off the court. The businessman turned basketball coach led what would become a complete transformation of the inner city Richmond High School during the late 1990′s. His leadership set a new standard of winning, one that transcended the hoop dreams of high school, to college educations, and futures his students could never have imagined for themselves. His thought provoking story would go on to become the inspiration for the acclaimed film, Coach Carter, starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Brad Kemp is director of regional research at Beacon Economics. With a keen understanding of the state’s regional diversity, he develops and authors Beacon Economics’ Regional Intelligence Reports, customized research briefs that help local leaders understand the key components, trends, and emerging issues facing their regional economies. A sought after speaker, Mr. Kemp regularly presents on the economic conditions that affect local markets at conferences and meetings across the state.
